Stop the Suffering of Galgos, Podencos & More
Every October, Spain’s hunting season begins – marking the start of a period of exploitation, abuse, and often death for galgos, podencos, and other hunting dogs. When the season ends on the 1st of February, thousands of these dogs are deemed “useless” and discarded. Many end up malnourished, injured, and traumatised in overcrowded shelters, while others face a far worse fate. Unlike household pets, Spanish law does not provide hunting dogs with any legal protection.
We demand an end to this cruelty and a law that protects ALL dogs!

“There are still those who see greyhounds as mere tools for hunting and exploit them without mercy. But a new generation is rising – one that seeks to protect these tormented creatures. Let us amplify their voices and stand aside the animals.”

No Change Despite New Legislation
For years, there was hope that Spain’s legal framework would improve for galgos and other hunting dogs. Initially, the proposed national animal protection law sought to grant working dogs the same protections as household pets. However, after lengthy negotiations and pressure from the hunting lobby, it became clear in 2023 that galgos, podencos, and other hunting dogs would not be included. These animals remain classified as hunting tools rather than living beings deserving of our protection.

Raising Awareness is Making a Difference
Animal welfare organisations report that awareness of galgos’ suffering has increased in recent years. Thanks to long-term education efforts and advocacy, more and more hunting dogs are being surrendered to shelters instead of being abandoned or killed. Yet, awareness alone is not enough. We demand that the Spanish government establish strong legal protections for all hunting dogs to prevent cruelty and their exploitation.

Change is in Our Hands
To improve the lives of galgos and other hunting dogs, we need both societal and political change. Animal protection must become a priority issue. With this petition, VETO is urging the Spanish government to put an end to the abuse and implement new animal welfare standards specifically for hunting dogs. At the same time, we are raising funds to support animal welfare organisations in rescuing and caring for abandoned hunting dogs.
